Upcoming Trips

Here are some of my upcoming trips. Some are confirmed, others are in planning, and it’s not an exhaustive list. I’ll add more as they come up, and keep in mind some of the trips may not materialise. All the trips have a photography emphasis, but of course, laid-back, pleasant people who happen not to be photographers are more than welcome! If you’re interested in any of these trips, please use my contact form to let me know or sign-up for my e-newsletter, which I send out from time-to-time with trip announcements.

sperm whaleOgasawara, Japan, Early October 2010. Following our incredibly successful 2009 trip (where we saw sperm whales eating a giant squid, among other things), I’m planning to go back to Ogasawara in search of sperm whales. The image on the left is one of the photos I took on my first visit some years ago. This image won the grand prize in Japan’s largest underwater photo contest, and was featured on the front page of the Asahi Shimbun. It’s also being used in the BBC Planet Earth series of books. Given the migratory nature of sperm whales and the volatility of open-ocean weather, this is a trip that’s for highly experienced swimmers/ snorkellers only, who understand that nothing in nature is predictable. If the thought of being alone in 3000-metre deep water in the open sea facing the largest carnivore in the ocean frightens you, this is not for you. Everything will be in Japanese, and obeying local rules is an absolute must. Experience rating: Highly experienced snorkeller, excellent swimmer, absolutely not afraid of water, boats, large animals. Comfortable with foreign (Japanese) environment. Exact dates TBD. Let me know via my contact form if you are interested.

The Night Safari Ambon 2010, 07 – 16 Nov 2010. A follow-up to the Night Safari in Lembeh, this trip will revolve around diving the prime critter sites of Ambon at night. We’ll be staying at the new Maluku Divers resort, which is right on top of the best muck sites, so we’ll have easy access. This trip is in conjunction with Eric Cheng and Wetpixel. More details here.

Western Australia, March 2011. More fun with Australian sea lions. More information here, here and here. Experience rating: Easy conditions, shallow water, able to snorkel.
