One of the most fulfilling aspects of doing what I do is that I have a chance to meet cool people from all over the world.
Last night, I managed to hook up with Mark Thorpe, who’s an excellent videographer and has been involved with many fascinating projects.
I first met Mark in Palau, then [...]

I included a small photo of Chuck Nicklin and me together in Tonga in my update for last week, but I found a better photo…better than the other one for two reasons.
First, this one was taken in daylight, and it’s in focus (the other was at night, and somewhat out of focus).
Second, this one includes [...]

This blog post isn’t nearly as titillating as the title might suggest. David Cheung, who owns and runs ScubaCam in Singapore, was in Tokyo today, and we managed to hook up and hang out.
This was David’s first visit to Tokyo. Since the city is really big, with lots of different and unique areas, I asked [...]

I was in Bangkok recently sitting with Aey and Mean from FiNS Magazine when a “tink!” sound on Mean’s computer signalled an incoming email. Lo and behold, Gunther Deichmann was also in town on his way back from conducting a photography workshop in Cambodia.
Of course, chance meetings like this call for a celebratory drink [...]

Some time ago, I received an email from Montana Black, an artist who lives in Colorado, asking for permission to use one of my photos as reference for a painting. She saw my photo on Flickr, which is a great photo sharing site.
“What a great idea!” I thought, and wrote back to her to [...]

One of the really cool things about doing what I do is having the opportunity to meet kindred spirits all over the world. By “kindred spirits”, I mean people who’ve lived unusual lives and been through extraordinary experiences, and who voluntarily do crazy things on a regular basis.
I met Mark Thorpe a few years [...]

After having heard so much about him, I finally had a chance to meet Wetpixel’s video guru Drew Wong recently in Bangkok. And of course, I hounded him with questions about existing and upcoming HD cameras, but sadly, there wasn’t sufficient time to absorb enough, so I’ll have to find another occasion to harass him [...]

Craig Dewit, owner and captain of liveaboard MV Golden Dawn in Papua New Guinea, was in town for a day. His plane was supposed to arrive from Brisbane at 19:35, but due to Qantas’ plane difficulties (something to do with a misbehaving fuel solenoid and the consequential inability to transfer fuel from one side of [...]

I’ve been wanting to visit the Solomon Islands for a long time. My good friend Eric Cheng is headed there in September this year aboard the Bilkiki, which is great for him but a real bummer for me because it conflicts with other plans I’ve made. There simply aren’t enough months in a year.
If you’re [...]

I recently came across the text from a lecture that Michael Crichton gave a few years ago. Crichton’s discussion pertains to rationality, in particular as applied to the modern-day phenomenon of “science by public consensus”, which is of course not science at all, but mob rule by another name.
Crichton takes the unpopular and un-politically correct [...]

My friend Gunther Deichmann has recently published a new book of images from his travels around the world. In short…it’s stunning. I spend so much time looking through images, both my own and those that other people have taken, that it really takes a lot for an image to make me stand up and take [...]
