Touchdown Tonga

planeAfter 47 hours of travel, watching sunrise from a small 17-seater plane as I finally arrived in Tonga early Friday morning was an inspiring experience.

I spent the entire day saying hi to friends and getting organised, then collapsed at about 8:00pm, sleeping like a rock for over 12 hours…the first full night of sleep I’ve had in about a week.

It rained last night, but the skies are clear this morning, though there’s a bit of wind picking up. Given my state of utter exhaustion, I decided to take an extra day of rest before hitting the water.watermelons

Two of my friends have been here for just under a week. It appears that no one has spotted any baby whales yet. Odd…by this time last year, I had found several, though as I recall, when I first arrived, everyone told me the same thing…that no one had seen any babies yet.

They haven’t seen any whales with all-white pectoral fins either yet. I’m keen to see if there are as many this year as there were last season.

Tomorrow, my quest begins.

Stop Making Sense

And now, in Auckland, I’ve had a tiny tube of superglue (purchased inside Singapore airport) confiscated. Colgate toothpaste (also purchased at Singapore airport) was no problem though, unlike at the Tokyo airport.

Also on this most recent flight, we received full sets of silverware (including knives) at mealtime. Hmmm, just a few years ago, we weren’t even allowed plastic knives, on the rationale that knives on planes are dangerous. I’ve had nail clippers confiscated on the same rationale. Now, knives are no problem it appears. Who knows what the current view on nail clippers is.

So now I’m allowed to brush my teeth and cut my food with a knife, but I won’t be able to fix the inevitable small cracks and breaks in my stuff.

Perhaps someone somewhere somehow can make sense of these seemingly arbitrary rules, but it’s beyond me.

Deadly Toothpaste

Apparently, Colgate is classified as a dangerous substance now. Just had a tube confiscated at Narita airport in Tokyo. 44 hours of travel ahead of me, and no toothpaste.

Thank you very much to all the %#@*%&^!!! loonies who want to blow everyone up.

Airfares have doubled, and I have to go without toothpaste. Aiyah. The world is truly screwed up.

24-hour Turnaround

After slightly over 24 hours on the ground (during which I sent out files, replied to hundreds of emails, made dozens of phone calls, ran all over town, unpacked, gave my dog a bath, and re-packed) I’m just about ready to head out again, this time to the Kingdom of Tonga.

As a double-check of my camera gear, here’s a list of what I’m taking:

2 x Canon 5D + 3 batteries + 2 chargers
1 Canon 1D MkIII + 1 battery + 1 charger
17-40mm lens
15mm fisheye lens
20mm lens
50mm lens
100mm lens
100-400mm lens
2 x Zillion 5D housings
Ports and extension tubes to fit all the above lenses
Diopters
CF memory cards: 2 x 8GB, 4GB
External hard disks: 160GB, 80GB, iPod
Plug shape adapters for the funny plug shapes they use down under
Camera straps
Camera rain jacket

Fortunately, I don’t have to take strobes, sync cords, arms, batteries and chargers, so the list is short this time. Still, given the jet lag, I’m wary of forgetting something. It’s not like I can pop over to the nearest camera store to pick things up.

Pasta’s OK

While I was away in the Bahamas, Pasta’s laboratory tests came back negative for cancer. Huge sigh of relief. Turns out it was most likely some sort of skin rash. Let’s just call it the world’s most expensive and anxiety-causing case of dog acne.

Back from the Bahamas

sharkJust got back to land today from 10 days looking for sharks in the Bahamas aboard the M/V Shear Water. Lots of fun, tonnes of sharks. I’ve only got a few hours before getting on a plane, then it’s off to Tonga almost immediately, so it’ll be a while before I can get full text and images up. For the time being, here’s a teaser image of a lemon shark and the swim step of the boat. Also, see Eric Cheng’s summary of the trip on his online journal.

Kvetch

One of the worst concepts ever invented must be the airport layover.

As if sitting in a cramped, uncomfortable, poorly designed seat for over 12 hours (Whoever designs airline chairs should be forced to sit in them. It’s like the seats are straight from a prisoner-of-war camp), being force-fed “food” with the culinary appeal of styrofoam and sawdust (Whoever dreams up the awful menus on some of the airlines should be forced to eat the damn stuff. It’s like the “food” is straight from a prisoner-of-war camp.), then being herded like cattle and being subjected to shoes-and-belt removal for a customs search (Truly a prison-of-war-camp-like experience)…isn’t terrible and degrading enough, long-haul trips often involve painfully long airport layovers.

Podcast: PixTips 0001

Together with FiNS Magazine, I’m starting a video blog called PixTips to cover topics related to underwater photography and video.

In this first episode, I provide an overview of how to take photos using a technology called sTTL, which allows you to simulate TTL photography underwater (provided you have the right set-up), and demonstrate the technique using a Nikon D200, Zillion housing and Inon strobes.

(Note: Something I realised I neglected to mention in the video…this isn’t the only way you can shoot TTL underwater. If there’s enough interest, I’ll try to cover some of the other ways in another video.)

To watch the video, you can:

  • Click on the graphic below to view the video in your browser (You need quicktime installed and also need to wait for the file to download. A video screen will replace the “Q” when the video is ready.),
  • Right click to download an iPod version under the graphic below,
  • Or subscribe to my iTunes podcast.

iPod iPod version (34.3 MB)

Bear with the video quality, as this was shot in less-than-ideal conditions:

  • High-end video camera: No
  • Controlled conditions: No
  • Controlled lighting: No
  • Good microphone: No
  • Prepared script: No
  • Professional editing software: No
  • Professional video editor: No
  • Sufficient rest: No
  • Smart-ass people in the background trying very hard to make me laugh: Yes

Despite the obvious handicaps, I hope the overall concepts are clear and easy to understand.

Pasta’s Ordeal

pasta pre surgeryA few days ago, we found a small bump on Pasta, just under her front left leg…something that didn’t look too nice. So naturally, we dropped everything and rushed off to the vet to have it checked out.

Pasta’s intelligent. She knows that rarely does anything pleasant ever come from a visit to the vet. So while she was ecstatic at the prospect of getting into the car, she was much less enthusiastic about the situation once she realised where we were heading. By that point however, it was too late for her to turn back…short of jumping out the window and making a break for it.
