Coffee Woes

I walked into a coffee place today, a popular chain, and asked for a regular decaf coffee. The guy taking my order nodded and said, “One decaf Latte”.

“Actually, could I just get a regular decaf coffee?” I repeated.

“Right, one decaf Latte”, he repeated.

“Ummm, how about a regular decaf coffee, not a Latte?” I asked in the most polite and patient voice I could muster.

Puzzled look from the obviously befuddled guy behind the counter, who exchanged knowing glances with his co-workers. Finally, he said slowly but kindly (as if addressing Forrest Gump): “We don’t serve decaf coffee.”

“I see. Do you have anything decaf besides Latte?” I asked.

“We have decaf Americano.” he quipped immediately.

“Ok, forget the decaf coffee and give me a decaf Americano.”

Content now, he took my order, and I got my decaf coffee Americano. An awful lot of trouble to get a frickin’ decaf coffee.

Talk at Singapore Library

I’ll be doing a talk at the Singapore Library@Orchard on 24 February (Saturday) from 3:00pm to 4:30pm about diving, travelling to exotic places and the unique challenges of photographing marine life and scenery. Basically, it’s a license for me to ramble for 90 minutes. If you have time and want to see some recent images of whales, sea lions and some of the best reefs in the world, drop by and say hi.

Admission is free, and it’ll be very informal. The talk is jointly sponsored by the National Library Board, SilkAir and Canon.

Billy Lee’s in Perth

YummyWhile I was in Western Australia, I had some of the best Chinese food I’ve had in years. Ok, perhaps the fact that there’s awesome Asian food in Perth is no big secret, but it was a revelation for me. It was, after all, my first visit to the area.

If you find yourself in Perth, a visit to Billy Lee’s Chinese Restaurant in China Town is a must. It doesn’t look like much from the outside, but the food…wow.

The acid test for a Chinese-food chef is Hot and Sour Soup. Achieving just the right mix of flavours in this dish is difficult, so if the Hot and Sour Soup is good, you know you’ve got a skilled chef.

The Hot and Sour Soup at Billy Lee’s? Simply out of this world.

Go here: Billy Lee’s Chinese Restaurant, located at the China Town gate on Roe Street, in the narrow street on the left. Open every day from 5:00pm to 4:00am.

Article: FiNS Magazine

FiNS CoverHere’s a recent feature I wrote about North Sulawesi for FiNS Magazine. North Sulawesi includes fantastic places like Bunaken, Manado, the Lembeh Strait and Bangka. It’s a long feature, so the file is sort of big, around 2.6 MB. The cover image for this issue is also from this article.

Me at Work?

Here are a few pictures people on the sea lion trip sent to me of me playing at work.

Note the incredibly elegant form and highly refined technique, especially in the first two images.

The last picture is of me taking a self-portrait with my sea lion friend. Note my right hand pointing at the camera lens. Why? To show the sea lion where to look, obviously.

Socialising with Sea Lions

Smiling PupWisdom is an illusory concept. More often than not, we’re not aware of the wisdom we lack until we reflect on situations in hindsight. As such, the quantum of wisdom we possess often falls short of the level we actually require. It seems the fate of humanity to profit from experience mostly in retrospect, and to acquire wisdom as a consequence of folly. As Leonardo da Vinci put it, “Wisdom is the daughter of experience.”

I’d like you to keep this thought in mind as I tell you about my recent trip to learn about Australian sea lions (Neophoca cinerea) at Carnac Island, Western Australia.

Playful Pinniped Preview

Sea LionHave just returned from my Australian sea lion trip. Absolutely beautiful animals, and incredibly friendly. As soon as I can, I’ll post a write-up of all the fun, as well as of some of the interesting things I learned about these endangered animals. I’m still thinking through the implications of the things I witnessed, experienced and learned, but suffice it to say that the story of these playful pinnipeds is a microcosm of the challenges we face in finding ways to ensure long-term sustainability of the world around us. In the meantime, here’s a portrait of one of my new friends.

Puffer

Harlequin

Resort

Resort

Solomon Islands with Eric Cheng

pastaI’ve been wanting to visit the Solomon Islands for a long time. My good friend Eric Cheng is headed there in September this year aboard the Bilkiki, which is great for him but a real bummer for me because it conflicts with other plans I’ve made. There simply aren’t enough months in a year.

If you’re looking for someplace to go around that time of year, this is probably something you want to consider. The Solomons is an excellent destination for photography, and you can bug Eric for photo tips. I’m sure he won’t mind. :-)

Most of the spaces on the trip are filled already, but there are still a few spots available.

Amazon.com Selling Shark Fin

amazonAmazon.com is one of the most successful internet companies in existence, and is supposedly quite a progressive company. It’s amazing to find that Amazon is facilitating the sale of shark fin on its website, via third party Pacific Rim Gourmet, which is also a US company.

The practice of finning sharks is illegal in US waters, so by selling shark fins, Amazon is condoning an illegal practice. The international dive community has taken note of this over the holidays, and people all over the world are sending feedback to Amazon.

If you’d like to add your voice, you can emails Amazon’s Customer Service and Investor Relations departments at advantage@amazon.com and ir@amazon.com. You can also add your feedback directly on the product page.

Pacific Rim Gourmet’s email address is customerservice@pacificrim-gourmet.com.

Note: Several hours after putting up this blog post, the shark fin product was removed by Amazon.com. Thanks Amazon for listening to your customers!

Another Note: Divester reports that shark fin is still being sold on Amazon through another company, American Roland Corp. Let Amazon know your thoughts.

Final Note: Amazon has pulled all shark fin products from its site.

Photo Workshop in the Lembeh Strait

AdventurerThe Lembeh Strait is probably the most famous critter/ muck diving spot in the world. I’ve been to many other places with great muck diving, but Lembeh produces some of the most consistent results in some of the most comfortable diving conditions.

I’m scheduled to visit Lembeh again later this year. I’ll be holding a photo workshop on the new Archipelago Adventurer I liveaboard (from 24-28 March), which is a boutique liveaboard that specialises in cruising only the Lembeh Strait.
