Tony,

A few thoughts on the name-sake species which you mention in your article above. Generally speaking, R. aphanes have dark reticulations on its body, head, and fins. R. frondosa generally have round and oblong pale spots and blotches, a longer caudal fin, some longer anal and dorsal spikes, and the eye is often slightly larger and the tentacles above the eye are thicker and less branched.

I still vividly remember the first R. frondosa I found in Lembeh Strait over 13 years ago. Its been a couple of years since I've had the opportunity to dive PNG, but your article certainly reminds me why it is still a favored destination among critter divers.

Thanx.

Hey T,
Thank you for the excellent read!
I never cease to be amazed at your industry, desire for knowledge (useless or otherwise!) and retentive abilities!
Most of us were content just to chill... :)
Thanks again for being a travel-mate par excellence, and for everything else!
I can think of dozens of other things I’d like to write about, but I’d probably end up boring you to death, assuming that you’ve even read this far.
Now, I'm dead :D haha No way, that's a very nice article indeed and some super pics.
Looking forward to more

Best wishes,

Great report. What a wonderful destination. I met your friend Carl Roessler last week and he mentioned you. At the same event Bob Halstead was speaking about PNG and the wider area and was waxing lyrically about Eastern Fields.

Thankyou for such a great write up about Eastern Fields. I met Carl Roessler last July on Rodney Fox's boat and he mentioned it in passing as one of his faves which was when I first heard of it - he was too modest to say there was a dive site out there named after him!

Even with the absence of the sharks (and I bet everyone else reading your article shares your anger/despair about their disappearance) I would dearly love to get out there.

I am hoping to go to Yonaguni next year and crossing my fingers the hammerheads will still be around...

Thanks for the report - your posts are never boring! ;-) Very sorry to hear about the exploitation of sharks and other fish - the Eastern Fields were on my "must do" list for years.

I do hope that population will recover somehow but I'm afraid that's impossible since stupidity of mankind will prevent this ... :-(
