Graeme: The sea lions are really special there, and it certainly would be great if the relevant authorities were more constructive and logical in their efforts to protect them. I realise there are budgetary and personnel constraints, but it certainly seems as though political considerations are the most important. The boaters essentially have free reign to do what they wish on the beach, with no regard for the sea lions or other wildlife.

I hope you and your friends have some luck addressing this issue. Please let me know if anything happens!

Excellent article Tony. I visit Carnac regularly on a friends boat. I have never set foot on the island itself and was unaware of the sanctuary issues. However we frequently witness acts of blatant stupdity and ignorance of others who do venture onto the island. Now that i - and as a result, my friends - are better informed perhaps we can spread the word on this issue and even, tactfully, inform some of the miscreants of the error of their ways!
I have media contacts and I think getting a camera/journalist out there to see what goes on may be a helpful tool in spreading The Word! Thanks again! Fantastic photos!

I thouroughly enjoyed your article Tony! And I must say, it takes a lot for me to read a whole article, like I just did with yours. I can really appreciate your love for animals and concern for their habitat. I hated to read about the idiots throwing rocks and cricket balls at them...and the careless boaters driving right up next to the sleeping sea lions, not harming anyone just minding their own business.

I'm actually going to school to work with sea lions and other marine life in the future, so of course, I loved your pictures and was very jealous of your interaction. I have a friend that works at Sea World, and about a year ago, he took me behind the scenes and I got to play with the sea lions and do tricks with them...I even got a kiss as well! They're beautiful loving creatures, if you treat them right. And I really hope CALM gets their act together soon, because there's no excuse for the carelessness that takes place on a weekly basis there.

Thanks for the article.

As an obsessor over sea lions, I was floored with wonder and amazement at your brilliant photos! Thank you ever so much for sharing them.

"If you let the sea lions interact (or not interact) with you on their own terms, it’s completely reasonable in this circumstance. The misguided notion that people should never interact with wildlife under any circumstance is just that — misguided."

I couldn't agree with you more! After all...we ALL inhabit this earth and often sea lions end up on our territory...usually in need of human caring after & rehabilitation, so why not share this vast land!
