Bamboo Nights

My recent trip to North Sulawesi reminded me of an adventure I had three years ago in the area, which turned out to be a life-changing experience. I wrote a story about it shortly afterward, and even went to the effort of laying out the text and a few images in article format (an exercise which convinced me that I had no future as a layout/ graphic artist).

The story has nothing to do with diving, but I think it’s worth a read. Right click here to download the PDF file.

Tony, when Kasawari’s boat was bringing us into Bitung and you mentioned that you had spent many days on one of the outriggers we saw there, I so wanted to hear the entire story, but then we were up on the dock, on our way to the airport, and my poor brain was being barraged by too many other sights, topics, etc. - - - So what a great surprise to find the story with all the DETAILS here on your blog! - - - It’s so typical of you that you never said any more about this incredible adventure. And of course the comparison of the fishermen to the bambook and your words of praise and admiration for them, again tell so much about you. - - - This is a story I would have loved to share with my kids in school. Talk about amazing ways of catching fish; courage and stamina; stoic living; cultural differences. THIS sort of thing is what should be in the schoolbooks! So much to be learned here! - - - Thanks! Hi Pat,

I’m glad you enjoyed the story! Actually, it was telling you the short version of the story that reminded me that I had written out a long version previously. I had not thought about this for a long time!
